This April 2008 report from Proofpoint and Commtouch reviews the new techniques that spammers and malware distributors used to deploy their malicious software during Q1 2008. Spam levels ranged from 60 to 94 percent of all email hroughout the quarter. Malware distributors and spammers hid their unwanted messages within legitimate or legitimate-appearing web sites and messages. Mortgage refinancing spam jumped to 10% of all spam in January while holidays continued to be celebrated in spam and malware.
On average, 355,000 zombies were newly activated each day for the purpose of malicious activity.
