SUNNYVALE, Calif. – June 29, 2009 – Proofpoint, Inc., the leading provider of unified email security, email archiving and data loss prevention solutions, announced today that the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has deployed the Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway™ appliance to provide complete anti-spam and anti-virus protection at the network border.

UAB Information Technology manages more than 25,000 faculty, staff and student mailboxes. The university’s deployment of the Proofpoint Messaging Security GatewayTM appliance reduces costs, simplifies email management and diminishes the amount of unwanted or illegitimate messages that reach user inboxes. UAB receives approximately one million incoming messages per day, of which 90 percent are spam. Since deployment of the appliance, UAB has noticed an extensive decline in both time and money spent on controlling spam. “Few products in our inventory have been able to deliver such instantaneous, noticeable and decisive results,” said Sanders.

The university also uses the Proofpoint Dynamic Reputation™ module, which blocks malicious email connections at the gateway, thereby reducing the volume of email messages that are processed. Over the next year, UAB plans to evaluate other modules from Proofpoint to complement the solution, including Proofpoint Regulatory ComplianceTM to secure the transmission of confidential information in compliance with data privacy regulations.
