New Infographic: A Brief History of Data

Share with your network!

Data is part of our everyday lives, and sometimes it can be hard to fathom just how prevalent it is.

It was speech and language that first enabled us to capture and transfer information efficiently. From sound waves to radio waves, our evolution has been shaped by the major innovations through which we share information. Looking at our history, it is clear that the speed at which our society changes is in lockstep with the rate at which we share information.

We create information with the data that we have. Today we generate roughly 2.5 quintillion (2,500,000,000,000,000,000) bytes of data every day. With the growth of social media apps, we are dealing with more and more new data types. From Instagram posts to corporate emails, almost every interaction is being “datafied” through the devices we use and our interactions with technology.

In our new infographic, we showcase the extradentary history of communication data. In the last two years alone, 90% of the world’s total data volume was created.
