In-Person Briefing Center Presentation

Session Title: Disrupting Ransomware: Are Takedowns Effective?

Abstract: Most ransomware events occur after access is gained through other means, often via malware known as botnets. Law enforcement cooperates on takedowns -- but are they effective? In this talk we examine how actors pivoted to other malware within weeks of the Qbot takedown and how, only three months later, it came back. We'll answer the question: are takedowns ineffective, or is Qbot a special case?

Session Title: From Credential Phishing to BEC: Tracking TA4903

Abstract: TA4903 is unique among BEC actors for their wide array of techniques including credential phishing, spoofing US government agencies, MFA toolkits, and QR codes. They also use customized social engineering to convince recipients their emails are legitimate. In this talk, we will look at the quality tradecraft of TA4903 and discuss how they can help us change the way we defend against BEC threats.

Led by a program committee, the community shares information at confidential sessions throughout the year and at the annual meeting at RSA Conference, enabling security leaders at some of the world’s largest enterprises to collaborate and find actionable solutions to common challenges.

ESAF events are invitation-only and closed-door, enabling security executives to candidly share insights, discuss key issues, and find actionable solutions to today’s information risk management challenges. Members meet every year at the ESAF Annual Meeting held in conjunction with RSA Conference.
